SINGAPORE: Spain's Fernando Alonso snapped a year-long win drought to take the Singapore Grand Prix on Sunday, winning a drama-filled first-ever night race as a comical error cost Felipe Massa dearly.

It was the Renault driver's first victory since the Italian Grand Prix last year and capped a remarkable weekend that saw him top two of the free practice sessions but start 15th on the grid after a mechanical problem in qualifying.

He claimed his 20th career triumph by 2.95 seconds over Germany's Nico Rosberg in a Williams and Britain's world championship leader Lewis Hamilton who came in third.

Toyota driver Timo Glock was fourth with Toro Rosso's Sebastian Vettel following up his win in Italy this month with fifth. BMW Sauber's Nick Heidfeld took sixth.

The race was a new experience for every driver on a street circuit under powerful spotlights and it turned out to be one of the most exciting of the season.

Despite dark clouds lurking, Singapore's notorious tropical downpours stayed away and the whole race was run in dry, but hot and humid conditions.

Ferrari's Massa started from pole but a disastrous mistake cost him the race and valuable points in his push for the world title.

His 13th place finish means he is now seven points behind Hamilton in the championship hunt with just three Grand Prix left at Japan, China and Brazil.

The Brazilian was in the pits on lap 15 when he was given the green light and drove off with the fuel hose still attached to his car, leaving one of the pit crew floored and subsequently carted off in a neck brace.

Massa ended up sitting in his Ferrari at the end of the pit lane as the crew ran after him and managed to pull the hose free, but it ruined his chances. He was given a drive through penalty and rejoined in 18th place.

It was a miserable night for Ferrari with defending world champion Kimi Raikkonen ramming his car into the barriers with just four laps to go, ending his race.

The Massa drama occurred after the cars came in when Nelson Piquet careered into the wall on the exit from turn 17, bouncing into the barriers on the other side of the track, causing massive damage to his Renault.

He climbed out unscathed but the safety car was deployed.

Massa was leading at the time with Hamilton second but at the restart, Rosberg was in front followed by Jarno Trulli and Giancarlo Fisichella, with Robert Kubica fourth and Alonso fifth.

Hamilton was ninth, but Rosberg and Kubica were subsequently slapped with a 10-second stop penalty for coming into the pits after the Piquet crash before it had opened.

The complicated scenario saw Toyota's Trulli in the lead on lap 28 but without having pitted with Alonso second, Rosberg third and Hamilton charging in sixth.

With Trulli taking his first pit stop soon after Alonso, who started from 15th on the grid, amazingly found himself in front just after the halfway mark with a 4.9 second lead over Rosberg.

Alonso came in for his second pit stop on lap 41 and came out still in the lead, marginally ahead of David Coulthard and Hamilton.

Remarkably, when Coulthard pitted soon after he too drove off with the fuel pipe attached, knocking over a mechanic who was stretchered off with an injured ankle, dropping the Scotsman to ninth.

There was more action to come.

Alonso was cruising with a 23 second lead when Adrian Sutil shunted his Force India into the wall, bringing the safety car out again and wiping out the Spaniard's advantage.

When they restarted with seven laps left it was a sprint to the finish and two-time world champion Alonso made no mistake, writing his name in the record books as the first winner of a Formula One night race.

5 more China-made products found tainted with melamine

SINGAPORE: Five more China-made food products sold in Singapore have been detected to contain the industrial chemical melamine.

Two are flavoured milk and three are confectionaries containing milk powder as an ingredient.

They are: Dutch Lady Banana Flavoured Milk; Dutch Lady Honeydew Flavoured Milk; Silang - House of Steamed Potato - Potato Cracker; Puffed Rice Rolls - Butter Corn Flavour; and Puffed Rice Rolls - Cheese Flavour.

The latest findings bring the total number of affected products to eight.

The other products that were earlier found to be contaminated with melamine are Yi Li Choice Dairy Fruit Bar Yogurt Flavoured Ice Confection; Dutch Lady Strawberry Flavoured Milk; and White Rabbit Creamy Candy.

The Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) says the public need not be unduly concerned as it has suspended the import and sale of all milk and milk products from China since 19 September.

AVA also says only low levels of melamine were detected in the affected products. Consumers have to consume large quantities of the contaminated products over a prolonged period of time to have any potential ill effects on health.

For example, an adult weighing 60kg needs to eat 13 packs of Silang House Steamed Potato crackers daily for an entire lifetime to be affected by melamine contamination.

Similarly, a child weighing 30kg will need to eat six-and-a-half packs of the potato crackers for the ill effects of melamine to take root.

For enquiries on affected products, consumers can call AVA's hotline at 63257625 during office hours (8.30am-6pm, Monday-Friday).

For health concerns associated with the ingestion of melamine, consumers can call Ministry of Health's hotline at 1800-2254122.

Consumers can also visit AVA's website for more information.

AVA, MOH say low melamine levels found in affected milk products here

SINGAPORE: Singapore authorities have given the assurance that the risk of melamine poisoning to Singaporeans is low. There have been growing concerns after three China-made products in Singapore were found to be laced with the industrial product.

Authorities said the tainted products will have to be consumed over a prolonged period of time before one gets really sick. That's because the body can safely take in and purge some amount of melamine.

The Tolerable Daily Intake (TDI) of melamine as established by the US Food and Drug Administration is 0.63 mg/kg body weight.

This means that an adult weighing 60 kg or a child weighing 30 kg can ingest 37.8 mg of melamine and 18.9 mg of melamine respectively, everyday, over a lifetime without any appreciable health risk.

37.8 mg is about the size of a grain of rice.

The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) cited an example of drinking about 80ml of liquid everyday for an entire lifetime, before the ill effects of melamine take root.

The Ministry of Health also cited an example of an adult weighing about 60kg who ate 47 pieces of the white rabbit candy everyday over a lifetime and the health risk for this adult will still be very low.

For a child who weighs 30 kg, that's about 400 ml of the Dutch Lady Strawberry Flavoured milk daily over a lifetime.

And so there's very little chance that a child will be affected unless his sole source of food is tainted milk.

However, worried parents can still look out for certain symptoms.

Professor Yap Hui Kim, Head of Paediatric Nephrology, National University of Singapore, said: "In infants there will be a pain. And if there is a pain when one urinates, an older child will be able to tell you. Or they would scream when they're passing urine. Many of them will also come down with fever, will be unwell, and will vomit."

To date, government hospitals have not treated any child affected by melamine toxicity as a result of consuming contaminated milk or milk products.

Melamine is also not known to cause deformities in unborn infants.

According to a doctor from KK Hospital, there've also been no calls from parents with queries on this. The doctor added there is no cause of alarm as the amount of melamine found in the products sold in Singapore is too low to cause kidney stones.

The AVA added that it is widening checks to include products made in other countries but may contain China milk-based ingredients.

Dr Chua Sin Bin, CEO, AVA, said: "We have contacted our importers to track down from the suppliers whether their products are manufactured with China milk, as an ingredient. If it is stop it and don't import from them."

He added the AVA will also include melamine under its export certification process to ensure food found in Singapore is certified melamine-free.

Although only three China-made products have been found tainted in Singapore, the AVA said it cannot rule out more of tainted products, as it continues its battery of tests.

As to why melamine was not detected earlier, Dr Chua said 300 chemical compounds come into the market every year. So it needs to take a pragmatic approach to its tests.

He added that no agency in the world conducts food tests for melamine.

He said: "It is a very abnormal occurrence. It is because someone cheated and intentionally added this into the product to beat the system and nobody could dream of that."

Consumers can call the AVA at 6325 7625 or the Ministry of Health at 1800-2254 122 if they have queries.

National Environment Agency (NEA) officers have also been deployed to check on bakeries, cake shops, hawker centres, coffeeshops and school canteens to ensure vendors do not use tainted products. - CNA/vm

Study finds that cyber-loafing at work increases productivity

Title : Study finds that cyber-loafing at work increases productivity
By :
Date : 11 September 2008 1020 hrs (SST)
URL : http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/lifestylenews/view/375152/1/.html

SINGAPORE: Men in Singapore do it for nearly an hour at work; women for 46 minutes. It’s called cyber-loafing, and most employees surveyed claim it actually helps them work better.

While employers have long worried over the man-hours lost and productivity costs due to staff engaged in personal emailing or browsing the Internet, some recent studies - including that done by two members of the NUS Business School’s Department of Management and Organisation - have found that workers in fact see such loafing as helpful.

Three in four local survey respondents agreed that it made work “more interesting”, while 57 per cent said it helped them deal with practical and personal issues at work.

What is interesting is the gender divide: Women tend to feel cyberloafing distracts them from work, postponing deadlines and completing less work. Men, however, are far more likely to claim a positive effect on their work.

The study based on a mail survey of 191 respondents - mostly young, single degree-holders - was done by Associate Professor Vivien Lim and Mr Don Chen. Most felt it was fine to cyber-loaf for 75 minutes daily at the office.

On the finding that this could help workers, the authors wrote: “One plausible reason is that browsing activities provided employees with an avenue of escape from work stress.”

They suggested that this could motivate them to perform better, and that companies should thus allow employees leeway to indulge in such non-work related online activities.

And just what are workers doing on the Internet at work?

Personal emailing, instant messaging and visiting news websites rank high on the list - although men are more likely than women to also browse sports websites.

But playing games, shopping and looking for another job online were low down the ladder. The reason? Respondents “found it difficult to rationalise that looking for employment online and engaging in online games would help them become more productive in their work,” said the authors.

So who most easily makes the switch from cyber-loafing back to work?

The men - they took four minutes compared with 10 minutes for women. “Studies have found that men are better in multi-tasking and find it easier to compartmentalise work and non-work demands,” said the authors.

Earlier studies done in the United States, such as those by WebSense.com, showed that the average time spent on non-work-related cyber-activities was about 10 hours per employee a week. - TODAY/ra

Instant Messaging Reduces Workplace Interruptions

Instant Messaging Reduces Workplace Interruptions
Posted by Jeff on 06-04-2008, 01:58 PM

Employers seeking to decrease interruptions may want to have their workers use instant messaging software, a new study suggests. A recent study by researchers at Ohio State University and University of California, Irvine found that workers who used instant messaging on the job reported less interruption than colleagues who did not.

The study challenges the widespread belief that instant messaging leads to an increase in disruption. Some researchers have speculated that workers would use instant messaging in addition to the phone and e-mail, leading to increased interruption and reduced productivity.

Instead, research showed that instant messaging was often used as a substitute for other, more disruptive forms of communication such as the telephone, e-mail, and face-to-face conversations. Using instant messaging led to more conversations on the computer, but the conversations were briefer, said R. Kelly Garrett, co-author of the study and assistant professor of communication at Ohio State.

“The key take away is that instant messaging has some benefits where many people had feared that it might be harmful,” Garrett said.

“We found that the effect of instant messaging is actually positive. People who used instant messaging reported that they felt they were being interrupted less frequently.”

The study involved 912 people who worked at least 30 hours per week in an office and used a computer for at least five hours in a workday. Randomly selected participants from 12 metropolitan areas took a telephone survey between May and September 2006. The results were published recently in the Journal of Computer Mediated Communication.

The key to unlocking the effects of instant messaging lies in how people are using the technology, Garrett said.

Instead of dropping in unexpectedly, many are using the technology to check in with coworkers to see when they are available. Many also use the technology to get quick answers to general questions or to inquire about current work tasks instead of engaging in longer face-to-face conversations.

“We find that employees are quite strategic in their use of instant messaging. They are using it to check in with their colleagues to find out if they’re busy before interrupting them in a more intrusive way,” Garrett said.

Because of its unique setup, instant messaging allows users to control how and when they communicate with coworkers. The technology gives people the ability to flag their availability or postpone responses to a more convenient time, and because it is socially acceptable to ignore or dismiss a message, many use the technology to put off more disruptive conversations, he said.

“People see a new technology and they are innovative in how they use it. They will tailor their use of the technology to their needs and their expectations. And with IM, people had enough time to learn about the technology at home and to find ways to use it productively,” Garrett said.

“It is not the case that people are engaging in extensive conversations or trying to resolve complex problems over this very limited medium. Instead, people are using the technology to solicit answers to quick questions from colleagues and coordinate their conversations at more convenient times,” he said.

Ease of use and similarities to e-mail could foster greater acceptance of instant messaging in the workplace. And while the study provides clear evidence that instant messaging can be used successfully in the workplace, Garrett said the technology will not likely be as widely used as e-mail.

Garrett conducted the study with James N. Danziger, a professor of political science at the University of California, Irvine. The study was funded by the National Science Foundation and the Center for Research on Information Technology and Organizations at University of California, Irvine.

3. The handsome and nice men are gay.
4. The handsome, nice and heterosexual men are married.
5. The men who are not so handsome, but are nice men, have no money.
6. The men who are not so handsome, but are nice men with money think women are only after their money.
7. The handsome men without money are after our money.
8. The handsome men, who are not so nice and somewhat heterosexual, don't think women are beautiful enough.
9. The men who think women are beautiful, that are heterosexual, somewhat nice and have money, are cowards.
10. The men who are somewhat handsome, somewhat nice and have some money and thank God are heterosexual, are shy and NEVER MAKE THE FIRST MOVE!!!!
11. The men who never make the first move, automatically lose interest in women when they take the initiative.

Men are like a fine wine... They all start out like grapes, and it's our job to stomp on them and keep them in the dark until they mature into something you'd like to have dinner with.
