Are you an annoying diver?

Most dive publications and advertising suggest that everyone who has ever donned a wetsuit is a smiling, friendly and likeable sort of person. The guys are cheerful and helpful and just the kind of fellow you would want by your side on any dive trip should anything go wrong underwater. The women are bright and healthy and look great in a brightly-coloured shorty, preferably with the zip casually opened.

Reality is seldom quite so shiny and perfect. Anyone who dives regularly will know what it means to be stuck listening to some boring moron drone on and on, or see some gung-ho macho divers doing something to imperil everyone.
Everyone has their own pet hates when it comes to fellow divers and, when you are stuck on the ocean in a small boat, there is no escape. Your bug-bears are in your face. The irritants are inescapable. So what are the most common ways for divers to get under the skin of others and, more importantly, are you guilty of them?

The Self-proclaimed Dive Legend
Conversations about diving when on a liveaboard or in a beach bar in the evening are pretty much unavoidable and, if you can't stand talking about diving, you should probably be doing something else. However there are different types of conversations. There are interesting chats about ground-breaking conservation movements or unusual encounters or discoveries. In other words, interesting tales contain an element of novelty. Sadly, there are many divers who mistake their own banal and unexceptional anecdotes for something of interest e.g. 'Yeah and then on one trip in Thailand I saw not 1 but 2. 2 really big manta rays!!'
Incredibly, this affliction can often spread like rabies and infect the person beside them and the person beside them, until suddenly you find yourself listening to several dive bores all jockeying for airspace and constantly striving to trump the preceding tale.
Interestingly, anyone who does know a thing or two about diving, knows that these dive bores tend to have more limited knowledge and experience than their gusto attempts to project. Experience teaches that the most deserving of respect and admiration in the dive world also tend to be the most humble.

The Hands-on diver
Everyone knows, or should know, where to draw the line when it comes to what level of interaction with the marine environment is acceptable. The majority of divers know that they are visitors in another realm and try to observe without molestation. Sadly not all. There are would-be heroes who organise dive trips with a group of their adoring fans/customers and then proceed to give the worst possible example of how human beings should behave underwater.
I saw an American trip leader in Fiji chase an octopus into a hole and proceed to jam his pointer in every fissure in the rock to force the hiding creature out. Several desperate puffs of ink, a panicky retreat ensued. He then proceeded to collect shells and even give the "OK" or otherwise to his disciples regarding their choice of mollusks.
At one point he swam quite near me and threw to me, in the style of a basketball pass, a cushion star, only to be disappointed when I failed to receive it. Instead I responded with a hand signal that might have looked like the initial movements of 'scissor, paper, stone'. I am not sure whether this particular primate felt the need to entertain his gang so much that all his etiquette went out the window, or he simply didn't give a toss in the first place. In any circumstance, the hands-on diver will cause much upset.
An honourable mention here must go to the photographer for whom the relentless pursuit of that awesome picture comes at the expense of the marine environment. All photographers are guilty of this sin to some extent and it is not necessarily the inexperienced who are the most to blame. It may not be fashionable to say it but. photographers damage reefs! Many claim somewhat arrogantly that the consciousness-raising their images inspire among the great unwashed masses results in a net environmental benefit, but this excuse just doesn't wash. The fact remains that many divers have witnessed more contact, interference and damage to the reefs by the sprawling limbs and sprawling equipment of role model photographers than the occasional stray fin kick of an open water diver.
I have been to resorts that ban gloves yet cater exceptionally well to photographers. To me that is a nonsense of the highest order. Yes, some may abuse the use of gloves but they are often worn for the same reason the rest of the body is covered: warmth and protection. There are times when currents require some form of holding on to a piece of rock, or a line or various other occasions when you may have to use your fingers, which are often softened and tender. Yet the mention of gloves leaves many in a state of apoplexy whereas someone bearing a bus-size amount of hi-tech photographic equipment and almost certain to damage the reef, is given the red carpet treatment.

The Piss-taker
Have you ever gone to hang up your wetsuit beside someone else and been overpowered by an acrid stench of pee? In what other sport or activity is it acceptable to foist upon one's companions the whiff of one's own feculence? Admittedly it is, to some extent the unavoidable result of well-hydrated bladders surrounded by liquid for three quarters of an hour and with no clear escape route.
However the writer has a zipper in his wetsuit and seldom struggles to find a quiet spot at least once on every dive to find a little shelter and create his own wee yellow thermocline. Just a quick check that there are no titan triggerfish around looking for a bite size snack and go with the flow.
It is easier for guys of course, and you need your own bespoke wetsuit but it can be done. Shouldn't you give it some thought?

The Clatterer
New divers, bless their little heads, are in a weird and wonderful new world and we have all been there and marvelled at the strange new element and the oddness of getting around in water. Propriosensitivity, or knowing where you are in relation to everything and everyone else, is a skill that develops over time.
We all know this, but it doesn't stop us getting annoyed when some newbie manages to kick and slap and swim into you (and everyone else) throughout the entire dive. Sure you can give the guy a wide berth but lose focus for a minute and start peering in at a squat lobster in a feather star and bang! In he clatters to you, arms waving in a riot of frantic bubbles.
Diving over a healthy reef can be such a soothing experience that when disturbed by someone who moves like they are the subject of an LAPD car chase, it really is a rude disruption and one that can remove all pleasure from the dive and restfulness from the mind.

The Singer
One of the great joys of diving is the lack of conversation. Meaningless, irritating jabber is something to be tolerated above the surface, yet below the waves there is little audible human chit-chat. However one cannot get away from one's thoughts and I am sure many divers have, like me, found it vexing that even at 30m it can be difficult to shake from one's head that catchy tune that was being played during kitting up. Diving is a place for pinks not Pink, buoyancy not Boyzone.
What is worse is when you are stuck on a liveaboard trip with someone who makes irritating repetitive noises above land that continue to plague your mind at 100 bar. I was once in the company of a Frenchman who insisted on randomly saying 'Pee pee pah pah po po' for no apparent reason on the dive deck. That, and the stereotype affirming 'Oh la la'. Incredibly these inane utterances managed to spin around in my head during any quiet time on any dive, much to my chagrin. Furthermore I would actually hear strange musical noises on dives and finally identified this same character as the culprit.
The world is full of human noises. Some inspiring but mostly just white noise, space-filling garbage and surely the watery world is one refuge where we should be able to escape the boring babble.

This list could go on and I am sure everyone has their own favourites that they could add, but there seems to be such an atmosphere of 'niceness' in diving that people would often rather just let it go than cause any upset by giving voice to their woes. Indeed discretion is normally the better part of valour when diving with the same strangers several days in a row. What joy it is to be able to vent one's splenetic juices from the safety of the keyboard!

If you see yourself in any of the above, please don't take it personally. You might not have realised that someone's hackles were being raised because we are all much too polite to say it. Well, most of us.

duality...

An Atheist Professor of Philosophy was speaking to his Class on the Problem Science haswith GOD, the ALMIGHTY. He asked one of his New Christian Students to stand and . . .
Professor : You are a Christian, aren't you, son?
Student : Yes, sir.
Professor : So, you Believe in GOD?
Student : Absolutely, sir.
Professor : Is GOD Good ?
Student : Sure.
Professor : Is GOD ALL - POWERFUL ?
Student : Yes.
Professor : My Brother died of Cancer even though he Prayed to GOD to Heal him. Most of us would attempt to help others who are ill.But GOD didn't. How is this GOD good then? Hmm?
(Student was silent )

Professor : You can't answer, can you ? Let's start again, Young Fella. Is GOD Good?
Student : Yes.
Professor : Is Satan good ?
Student : No.
Professor : Where does Satan come from ?
Student : From . . . GOD . . .
Professor : That's right. Tell me son, is there evil in this World?
Student : Yes.
Professor : Evil is everywhere, isn't it ? And GOD did make everything. Correct?
Student : Yes.
Professor : So who created evil ?
(Student did not answer)

Professor : Is there Sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness? All these terrible things exist in the World, don't they?
Student : Yes, sir.
Professor : So, who Created them ?
(Student had no answer)

Professor : Science says you have 5 Senses you use to Identify and Observethe World around you.Tell me, son . . . Have you ever Seen GOD?
Student : No, sir.
Professor : Tell us if you have ever Heard your GOD?
Student : No , sir.
Professor : Have you ever Felt your GOD, Tasted your GOD, Smelt your GOD?Have you ever had any Sensory Perception of GOD for that matter?
Student : No, sir. I'm afraid I haven't.
Professor : Yet you still Believe in HIM?
Student : Yes.
Professor : According to Empirical, Testable, Demonstrable Protocol,Science says your GOD doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son?
Student : Nothing. I only have my Faith.
Professor : Yes,Faith. And that is the Problem Science has.

Student : Professor, is there such a thing as Heat?
Professor : Yes.
Student : And is there such a thing as Cold?
Professor : Yes.
Student : No, sir. There isn't.
(The Lecture Theatre became very quiet with this turn of events )

Student : Sir, you can have Lots of Heat, even More Heat, Superheat, MegaHeat, White Heat,a Little Heat or No Heat. But we don't have anything called Cold.We can hit 458 Degrees below Zero which is No Heat, but we can't go any further after that. There is no such thing as Cold.Cold is only a Word we use to describe the Absence of Heat.We cannot Measure Cold.Heat is Energy.Cold is Not the Opposite of Heat, sir, just the Absence of it.

(There was Pin-Drop Silence in the Lecture Theatre )

Student : What about Darkness, Professor? Is there such a thing as Darkness?
Professor : Yes. What is Night if there isn't Darkness?
Student : You're wrong again, sir.Darkness is the Absence of Something. You can have Low Light, Normal Light, Bright Light, Flashing Light . . .But if you have No Light constantly, you have nothing and its calledDarkness, isn't it?In reality, Darkness isn't.If it is, were you would be able to make Darkness Darker, wouldn't you?
Professor : So what is the point you are making, Young Man ?
Student : Sir, my point is your Philosophical Premise is flawed.
Professor : Flawed ? Can you explain how?
Student : Sir, you are working on the Premise of Duality. You argue there is Life and then there is Death, a Good GODand a Bad GOD.You are viewing the Concept of GOD as something finite, somethingwe can measure.Sir, Science can't even explain a Thought. It uses Electricity and Magnetism, but has never seen, much less fullyunderstood either one.To view Death as the Opposite of Life is to be ignorant of the fact thatDeath cannot exist as a Substantive Thing.Death is Not the Opposite of Life: just the Absence of it.Now tell me, Professor, do you teach your Students that they evolved from a Monkey?Professor : If you are referring to the Natural Evolutionary Process, yes, of course, I do.
Student : Have you ever observed Evolution with your own eyes, sir?
(The Professor shook his head with a Smile, beginning to realize where the Argument was going )

Student : Since no one has ever observed the Process of Evolution at work and Cannot even prove that this Process is an On-Going Endeavor,Are you not teaching your Opinion, sir?Are you not a Scientist but a Preacher?

(The Class was in Uproar )

Student : Is there anyone in the Class who has ever seen the Professor's Brain?

(The Class broke out into Laughter )

Student : Is there anyone here who has ever heard the Professor's Brain,Felt it, touched or Smelt it? . . .No one appears to have done so.So, according to the Established Rules of Empirical, Stable,Demonstrable Protocol,Science says that You have No Brain, sir. With all due respect, sir, how do we then Trust your Lectures, sir?

(The Room was Silent. The Professor stared at the Student, his face unfathomable)

Professor : I guess you'll have to take them on Faith, son.
Student : That is it sir . . . Exactly !The Link between Man & GOD is FAITH. That is all that Keeps Things Alive and Moving.

That student was Albert Einstein.

"dear, i got sth 4 u..."

unzipped his pouch (fumbling wif e zip slightly)...a box...

i dun really rememb if he kneeled down immediately or if he presented e ring 2 me 1st den he kneeled...my head was buzzing...& i was really quite tired fr e dives...i tink he gave me e box but 4got 2 kneel...after i asked him den he kneeled...

i really didnt know wat 2 say....

"dear dear, will u marry me?"

still i had absolutely nth gg thro my head...it was blank....& it was really juz buzzing....

"dear, get up la...every1 looking..."

"u haven answer me, how 2 get up?"

"yeah..i'll juz kneel here until u reply.."

"ok.."

"so i kneel here ah??"

"sit on e chair la.."

"so u gg 2 marry me??"

"ok"

"really?"

"hmm"

finally i nodded my head....

even though my head was still buzzing...i know i made a rite choice...=)

yet another eventful flight bk...

Following e qantas eventful flight bk 2 spore…e flight bk fr manado was yet another unforgettable trip…

Heng tis time there was no terrorist…e flight was kana cancelled cos 1 o e pipe 4 e hydralics had burst….

I chk-in on 11 Mar morn via e internet…there was no indication tt there was gg 2 b a delay in e flight…we rc e airport ard 1215 (flight departure was supposed 2 b 1345)….during chk-in den we saw e notice pasted on e counter…flight delayed 2 1455, we cld ‘ve done more shopping if we knew it was gg 2 b delayed…haizz…no choice loh…juz wait…heng we had KFC b4 we came…

1355, we went 2 e immigration, e boarding time was supposed 2 b 1355…e gate wasn’t open 4 boarding…so we waited…

ard 1415, there was an announcement tt e silkair flight had landed….but there was no sight/sign o e plane….no passengers coming out….hmmmm….

way past e supposed departure time, there was still no sight o e plane….finally ard 1515, e silkair plane was finally towed 2 e gate…e passengers finally got off e plane….

It was way way past e departure time but still no news….den e announcement came tt e flight was gonna b delayed, & there were refreshments (bread & drinks)….but still no news on wat was happening….

& so we waited….

Finally ard 1600, e manager o Silkair, came wif a loudhailer…he said tt e pilot had discovered a leak in e hydraulic system, & there was a nd 2 chk wif e engineer…he said tt e pilot said it was a small problem, but e engineer’s advice was needed…there wld b a possibility tt e plane might b grounded…& he said he wld b bk in an hr’s time 2 update us…

KFC (again!!!argh!!!) was given out….wait wait wait wait wait….

Finally e manger came bk after 1 hr or so…e plane grounded!!! There was no flight, & they had 2 deliver e parts fr spore, so hopefully e nx morn 0630 shld b able 2 fly…

Arrangements were made 2 retrieve e luggages, & transport 2 e hotel…

When we were on our way 2 e hotel, suddenly e coach broke down!!!in e middle o e road!!! Jammed up e whole road!!! Wah lau….heng after ard 10-15mins…e coach finally revived!!! By e time we rc e hotel, oredi 1830…dinner was provided @ 1930…so we went 2 e rm 2 shower, had 2 dig thro’ all my clothes 2 find 1 tt didn’t smell…heng I separated all e smelly (diving) clothes…otherwise I wld ‘ve nth 2 wear!!! & also heng tt, tt morn we went shopping, & I got extra t-shirt, HN also…

E flight was cfm 2 b 0630 e nx morn, & we had 2 leave e hotel by 0500…so 0330 had 2 get up, shower & ‘ve bfast…..

It was pouring in e morn when we got up….e coach was not big enough 2 carry every1 + e luggages… & it took them quite sme time 2 finally get every1 on e road…

By e time we rc e airport, it was ard 0600 (heng e traffic early in e morn was super light, otherwise I tink 0700 we also dunno can rc or not…)…

When we got 2 e airport, there was a lot o pple…a lot o locals catching domestic flight I tink…& we had 2 squeeze in wif all e pple!!!! So stupid!!!! We were all late oredi…still nd 2 squeeze… _ _

Finally got thro, den we nd 2 chk-in again!!!! & it took another hr or so….by e time we went thro’ everything, & every1 was onboard, it was nearly 0730….

Finally e plane was gg 2 e taxi way!!!! FINALLY I tot!!

But waited 4 sme time, no movement, den e captain came on…there was supposedly sme technical fault again, & we needed 2 go bk!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wah lau…………….

We learnt fr e air-stewardess tt e engineer & pilot nd 2 configure e aircraft, & there was sme signature issues 2 settle b4 we can fly…so again, we were dished out bread/crossiants while we waited….haiz…..

Finally finally finally, e captain came on again & said tt everything was settled & we were finally able 2 fly bk…by tt time it was 0830 or mayb near 2 0900?? We finally took off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Finally we rc spore at ard 1130….we got off but there was no1 2 tell us wat we needed, & I was damned hungry!!! So I decided 2 juz call silkair later instead, so we went 4 our lunch…

But tis morn, when I called silkair, I learnt tt I nded 2 go down 2 their sales office in keypoint 2 get e documentation tt e flight was delayed…wah lau…& their opening hrs only on wkdays!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I asked if they cld email or send it via snail mail or anything, but apparently it was not possible, & I had 2 go down personally 2 collect!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wah lau….i really 1ed 2 ask e ABNN 2 F*** off….so damned pissed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, I wrote a super long complaint letter on their feedback & enquiries page…hopefully they’ll get bk 2 me soon…otherwise I’m gg send in 2 e newspapers 2 tell e whole world abt e super poor service….;p

i really like tis quote that poh ya put in her blog taken fr benjamin buttons:

At the end, Benjamin Button's letter to his daughter: For what it's worth: it's never too late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be. There's no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you're proud of. If you find that you're not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again.

Psychopath Test

Read this question, come up with an answer and then scroll down to the bottom for the result. This is not a trick question. It is as it reads.

While at the funeral of her own mother, a woman met a man who she did not know. She thought he was 'amazing'. She believed him to be her dream partner so much that she fell in love with him right there, but never asked for his number and could not find him. A few days later she killed her sister.

Question:
What was her motive for killing her sister? Give this some thought before you answer. (See answer below).

She was hoping the guy would appear again at her sister's funeral. If you answered this correctly, you think like a psychopath. This was a test developed by a famous American psychologist, used to test if one has the same mentality as a killer.

Many arrested serial killers took part in the test and answered the question correctly. If you didn't answer the question correctly, good for you.

If you got the answer correct, please let me know so I can take you off my e-mail list .

Researchers solve mystery of deep-sea fish with tubular eyes and transparent head

Super weird looking fish!!!!

go to this website (can click on e title above) for more info, pics & video...
http://www.mbari.org/news/news_releases/2009/barreleye/barreleye.html

The barreleye (Macropinna microstoma) has extremely light-sensitive eyes that can rotate within a transparent, fluid-filled shield on its head. The fish's tubular eyes are capped by bright green lenses. The eyes point upward (as shown here) when the fish is looking for food overhead. They point forward when the fish is feeding. The two spots above the fish's mouth are olfactory organs called nares, which are analogous to human nostrils. Image: © 2004 MBARI

Researchers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute recently solved the half-century-old mystery of a fish with tubular eyes and a transparent head. Ever since the "barreleye" fish Macropinna microstoma was first described in 1939, marine biologists have known that its tubular eyes are very good at collecting light. However, the eyes were believed to be fixed in place and seemed to provide only a "tunnel-vision" view of whatever was directly above the fish's head. A new paper by Bruce Robison and Kim Reisenbichler shows that these unusual eyes can rotate within a transparent shield that covers the fish's head. This allows the barreleye to peer up at potential prey or focus forward to see what it is eating.

Deep-sea fish have adapted to their pitch-black environment in a variety of amazing ways. Several species of deep-water fishes in the family Opisthoproctidae are called "barreleyes" because their eyes are tubular in shape. Barreleyes typically live near the depth where sunlight from the surface fades to complete blackness. They use their ultra-sensitive tubular eyes to search for the faint silhouettes of prey overhead.

Although such tubular eyes are very good at collecting light, they have a very narrow field of view. Furthermore, until now, most marine biologists believed that barreleye's eyes were fixed in their heads, which would allow them to only look upward. This would make it impossible for the fishes to see what was directly in front of them, and very difficult for them to capture prey with their small, pointed mouths.

Robison and Reisenbichler used video from MBARI's remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) to study barreleyes in the deep waters just offshore of Central California. At depths of 600 to 800 meters (2,000 to 2,600 feet) below the surface, the ROV cameras typically showed these fish hanging motionless in the water, their eyes glowing a vivid green in the ROV's bright lights. The ROV video also revealed a previously undescribed feature of these fish--its eyes are surrounded by a transparent, fluid-filled shield that covers the top of the fish's head.

Most existing descriptions and illustrations of this fish do not show its fluid-filled shield, probably because this fragile structure was destroyed when the fish were brought up from the deep in nets. However, Robison and Reisenbichler were extremely fortunate--they were able to bring a net-caught barreleye to the surface alive, where it survived for several hours in a ship-board aquarium. Within this controlled environment, the researchers were able to confirm what they had seen in the ROV video--the fish rotated its tubular eyes as it turned its body from a horizontal to a vertical position.

In addition to their amazing "headgear," barreleyes have a variety of other interesting adaptations to deep-sea life. Their large, flat fins allow them to remain nearly motionless in the water, and to maneuver very precisely (much like MBARI's ROVs). Their small mouths suggest that they can be very precise and selective in capturing small prey. On the other hand, their digestive systems are very large, which suggests that they can eat a variety of small drifting animals as well as jellies. In fact, the stomachs of the two net-caught fish contained fragments of jellies.

After documenting and studying the barreleye's unique adaptations, Robison and Reisenbichler developed a working hypothesis about how this animal makes a living. Most of the time, the fish hangs motionless in the water, with its body in a horizontal position and its eyes looking upward. The green pigments in its eyes may filter out sunlight coming directly from the sea surface, helping the barreleye spot the bioluminescent glow of jellies or other animals directly overhead. When it spots prey (such as a drifting jelly), the fish rotates its eyes forward and swims upward, in feeding mode.

Barreleyes share their deep-sea environment with many different types of jellies. Some of the most common are siphonophores (colonial jellies) in the genus Apolemia. These siphonophores grow to over 10 meters (33 feet) long. Like living drift nets, they trail thousands of stinging tentacles, which capture copepods and other small animals. The researchers speculate that barreleyes may maneuver carefully among the siphonophore's tentacles, picking off the captured organisms. The fish's eyes would rotate to help the fish keep its "eyes on the prize," while its transparent shield would protect the fish's eyes from the siphonophore's stinging cells. MBARI researchers speculate that Macropinna microstoma may eat animals that have been captured in the tentacles of jellies, such as this siphonophore in the genus Apolemia.

Robison and Reisenbichler hope to do further research to find out if their discoveries about Macropinna microstoma also apply to other deep-sea fish with tubular eyes. The bizarre physiological adaptations of the barreleyes have puzzled oceanographers for generations. It is only with the advent of modern underwater robots that scientists have been able to observe such animals in their native environment, and thus to fully understand how these physical adaptations help them survive.

Happy Year of the OX!!! =) HUAT AH...
